Who can be treated? With our laser at SmoothSF, we can treat all skin types safely and effectively. The Cynosure laser has both the 755-nm Alexandrite setting for lighter skintypes and the 1064-nm Yag setting for darker skintypes. Before and after treatment for all skintypes, we strongly encourage keeping treated areas out of the sun as much as possible and, when sun exposure is unavoidable, strong SPF sunscreens.

What can someone expect before, during, and after treatment?

It is always comforting to know what to expect prior to the experience. At SmoothSF, we ask that prior to coming in for your treatment, shave the areas to be treated either the day of or the day before. The closer the shave, the more effective the treatment. That way, all of the laser energy gets delivered under the skin and to the follicle. Any hair that you want left behind, do not shave.

Prior to coming in we ask that you go to our homepage, www.smoothsf.com and click the register tab. We are a green and paperless office so we ask that you fill out your medical history and consent forms online.

If you wish to use our numbing cream, we ask that you arrive 45 minutes prior to your treatment for maximum efficacy. Most people, however, tolerate the treatments without the numbing cream.

During the treatment, you will wear goggles to protect your eyes from the light emmited from the laser. Once the laser starts firing, you may feel a stinging or snapping sensation. The treatment involves a series of pulses, each feeling like a snap. You might also detect the smell of burning hair. This is totally normal and is no cause for concern.

The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour. The smaller the area, the less time it will take. Larger areas such as full legs or a full back take about an hour. After the treatment there is often redness that will subside in a few hours. For the most part, it is not necessary to apply anything to the skin following treatment. Over the next two weeks, the hairs will be expelled from the body.

For the most part, you can return to your normal daily routine immediately, though you should avoid any direct sun exposure. Be sure to use a sunscreen with a high SPF. You should continue to avoid any direct sun exposure or tanning beds for several weeks after treatment. Be careful when touching the treated areas: don’t wax or pluck hairs, pick at the skin, or rub or scrub it. A gentle washing with soap and water is perfectly fine.
